How to Import Fasteners from China to Kazakhstan: Complete Guide

Kazakhstan imports the large majority of its fasteners — the domestic base is small, and construction, oil & gas and rail projects run on imported bolts. China is the natural source: shared land border, daily rail and truck corridors, and a supplier base that already manufactures to the DIN, ISO and GOST standards Kazakh projects call for. This guide walks through the whole route from choosing a supplier to clearing customs in Almaty or Astana: certification, standards, shipping, payment, and quality control.

Why Kazakh buyers source fasteners from China

  • Freight advantage. Kazakhstan is the only major fastener-importing market that shares a land border with China. Rail freight from Chinese plants to Almaty runs days, not weeks, and trucking via Khorgos is viable for urgent orders.
  • Standards coverage. Chinese export manufacturers routinely hold dual-certified production — the same plant runs DIN/ISO specs for Europe and GOST specs for CIS markets. You are not choosing between them.
  • MOQ reality. Project procurement in Kazakhstan is often 5–30 tonnes per line item. Chinese factories set MOQs that fit that scale; European mills generally do not.

EAC certification: what the EAEU actually requires

Kazakhstan is part of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), so import requirements follow EAEU technical regulations, not purely national Kazakh law. For fasteners:

  • Ordinary industrial fasteners (bolts, nuts, washers, threaded rod for general use) are generally not subject to mandatory EAC certification as standalone products — they are components, and the certification obligation usually sits with the finished equipment or structure they go into.
  • In practice, you still need paperwork. Customs and end customers will ask for one of: an EAC declaration of conformity (if the fasteners are covered by a regulation such as TR CU 010 for machinery applications), or an exemption letter (отказное письмо) from an accredited certification body stating the product is outside mandatory certification. Chinese suppliers experienced with the EAEU can arrange the draft documentation; the declaration or letter itself must be issued through a body accredited in the EAEU.
  • High-strength structural fasteners for buildings and bridges are the exception that most often gets stopped: these can fall under TR CU 010 / construction regulations, and project specifications typically demand full test certificates anyway.

Plan for the paper to take 1–3 weeks. Order it in parallel with production, not after.

GOST vs DIN: the standards translation table

Kazakh project drawings mix Soviet-era GOST standards with modern DIN/ISO. Most Chinese export factories can quote either. The common equivalences:

  • Hex bolts: GOST 7798 (П class, coarse thread) ≈ DIN 933 (full thread) / DIN 931 (partial thread). Strength classes align: GOST 5.8/8.8/10.9 map to ISO 8.8/10.9.
  • Hex nuts: GOST 5915 ≈ DIN 934.
  • Flat washers: GOST 11371 ≈ DIN 125.
  • Spring washers: GOST 6402 ≈ DIN 127.
  • Threaded rod: GOST 3199 / GOST 1215 stubs ≈ DIN 975.

Where they differ: GOST tolerances and head dimensions are metric but slightly different from ISO, so a GOST 7798 M16 bolt is not a DIN 933 M16 bolt for fit-critical assemblies. If the drawing says GOST, order GOST — do not let a supplier substitute “equivalent” DIN without written approval from the design institute.

Shipping: rail, truck or sea?

  • Rail (the default). Container trains run from Chinese plants via Alashankou (Dostyk) or Khorgos (Altynkol) into Kazakhstan. Typical transit from East-China plants to Almaty: 10–18 days door to door including gauge-change at the border. Cheapest per kg for 20’+ volumes.
  • Truck via Khorgos. For urgent or smaller lots. 5–10 days to Almaty, higher cost per kg, flexible pickup.
  • Sea via Lianyungang/Aktau. Seldom faster and only competitive for Caspian-region delivery on non-urgent cargo.

Practical note: book rail space early in Q4 and before Nowruz (late March) — border crossings congest seasonally and slot waits of 1–2 weeks happen. Also confirm who handles the border transshipment; your Incoterm decides this. For choosing between FOB, CIF and DAP — and who eats the border risk — see our Incoterms guide for fastener imports.

Payment terms with Chinese suppliers

  • 30/70 T/T (30% deposit, 70% against shipping documents) is the standard opening position for a new relationship.
  • USD settlement remains normal for Kazakhstan–China trade through standard banks; CNY settlement is increasingly available and sometimes cheaper on FX spread.
  • First order: consider an inspection-before-balance-payment clause — release the 70% after a third-party or your own inspector has checked the goods. Our fastener pre-shipment inspection checklist lists exactly what to check before release.

Quality control: what to require before shipping

  1. EN 10204 3.1 MTC for every heat lot — chemistry and mechanical results traceable to heat number. Our guide to reading an MTC shows which fields matter.
  2. Coating verification for galvanised lots — thickness measurement and salt spray class on the certificate, not just “galvanised” on the packing list. Details in our zinc plating specification guide.
  3. Thread gauges, not just samples. Ask the factory for GO/NO-GO gauge records on the production lot; dimensional drift mid-run is more common than people admit.
  4. Export packaging — rail transit is rougher than sea. Heat-treated (ISPM-15) pallets, strapped and shrink-wrapped cartons, weather protection for the gauge-change yards. Our bulk fastener export packaging guide covers the spec to send the factory.

Frequently asked questions

Do fasteners imported to Kazakhstan need EAC certification?

Ordinary industrial fasteners as standalone components generally fall outside mandatory EAC certification, but customs and end customers will ask for documentation. In practice you need either an EAC declaration of conformity (when the application is covered by an EAEU technical regulation) or an exemption letter from an accredited EAEU certification body. High-strength structural fasteners for construction almost always need the full certificate route. Budget 1-3 weeks for the paperwork.

Can a Chinese factory supply to GOST standards?

Yes, export-oriented factories that serve CIS markets routinely manufacture to GOST 7798 bolts, GOST 5915 nuts and GOST 11371 washers alongside DIN/ISO production. The important point is to order the exact standard on the drawing: GOST and ISO dimensions differ slightly, and substitutions need written approval from the designer.

How long does shipping from China to Kazakhstan take?

Rail freight via Alashankou or Khorgos typically runs 10-18 days door to door from East-China plants to Almaty, including the gauge change at the border. Trucking via Khorgos takes 5-10 days at higher cost. Book rail space early in Q4 and before Nowruz in late March, when border congestion adds one to two weeks.

What payment terms should I expect on a first order?

The standard opening position is 30% T/T deposit with 70% balance against shipping documents. For a first order, add an inspection clause: release the balance only after pre-shipment inspection passes. USD settlement through standard banks is normal; CNY settlement is increasingly available and sometimes cheaper on FX spread.
