Double End Studs (DIN 938 / DIN 939)

Double end studs have a thread at each end and a plain shank in the middle. They are used where a through bolt is not practical — typically on flange joints, valve and pipe connections and equipment that must be dismantled from one side only. DIN 938 has a thread length of about one diameter; DIN 939 has a longer thread of about 1.25 diameters for use in softer materials.
